This article serves as an introduction to the monographic issue. It establishes the theoretical foundations for a conceptualisation of the notions of adaptation and adaptability applied to the field of linguistics. As shown in the first section, adaptation can be understood in two complementary senses: as a process of variation, change, and innovation that arises spontaneously in context; and as a deliberate, professional, and socially significant practice aimed at adjusting a text to a particular communicative context or purpose. This introductory work concludes with the presentation of the thirteen articles that make up the volume.

Abstract

This article serves as an introduction to the monographic issue. It establishes the theoretical foundations for a conceptualisation of the notions of adaptation and adaptability applied to the field of linguistics. As shown in the first section, adaptation can be understood in two complementary senses: as a process of variation, change, and innovation that arises spontaneously in context; and as a deliberate, professional, and socially significant practice aimed at adjusting a text to a particular communicative context or purpose. This introductory work concludes with the presentation of the thirteen articles that make up the volume.
