“En el margen de la periferia: lenguaje e identidad en Piñen de Daniela Catrileo”

An analysis of Mapuche literature reveals certain issues related to the predominantly oral nature of their culture and the fact that, over the years, their voice has been increasingly silenced. My proposal aims to foster a reflection on what it means to be a woman and to be Indigenous, particularly among the new generations of daughters born in cities, who are attempting to reclaim, through memory, the learning of the Mapudungun language and their connection to their ancestral culture. The short story collection Piñen (2019), by Daniela Catrileo (1983), represents a unique case study, as the author seeks to eradicate the stereotypical portrayal not only of the Mapuche but also of women, drawing on her mestizo identity. Catrileo also accounts for the political and identity-forming process led by the Mapuche in the diaspora and emphasizes the urban space in order to acknowledge the migratory processes of the Mapuche—displaced and marginalized in southern Santiago, on the outskirts of the outskirts.
