In German, the grammatical category evidence is lacking in the verbal paradigm. However, there is other ample means to express evidential categories indirectly via modal particles, modal verbs and verb position, as we will see below. The present article focuses on the role that modal particles have in the interpretation of weil+V2-clauses and argues that V2 in conjunction with the type of modal particle indicates that the speaker's evaluation of the embedded proposition - be it subjective /emotional or evidential -is relevant for the state of affairs expressed in the main clause.

Abstract

In German, the grammatical category evidence is lacking in the verbal paradigm. However, there is other ample means to express evidential categories indirectly via modal particles, modal verbs and verb position, as we will see below. The present article focuses on the role that modal particles have in the interpretation of weil+V2-clauses and argues that V2 in conjunction with the type of modal particle indicates that the speaker's evaluation of the embedded proposition - be it subjective /emotional or evidential -is relevant for the state of affairs expressed in the main clause.
