The sonnet «A un retrato del duque de Osuna» by Guido Reni is often regarded as an instance of ekphrasis based on a lost painting, but it is considerably more than that. Accordingly, this study proposes a reinterpretation of the poem along six lines of inquiry: following a review of its principal interpretative keys and chronology, it examines the network of relationships among the three protagonists, the range of possible identifications of the portrait, the connection with poems dedicated to the painter, and a pair of artistic syntagms, in order ultimately to offer a new reading of the sonnet as an artistic and imaginary encomium.
