The paper presents a series of critical observations on the so-called Argumenta Vergiliana, identifying as their defining features the close interplay of scholastic practice, late antique exegesis, Virgilian emulation, combinatory poetics, and Christian culture. As a case study, the paper offers a detailed analysis of the tetrastich argumentum to Book I of the Aeneid (AL 654, 5-8 R2), together with the proposal of a critical text.
