The article starts from Seneca's 'adsidua meditatio' as a meditation that daily prepares the wise man to die, to learn to die. The aim is to gain serenity, reflecting on the precarious nature og human lif. On this basis, light is also shed on Marcus Aurelius' "self-directed" meditations, for which the aim remains an adjustement of the wise man to reality and the conciliatio with the uiverse.
