Collaborative innovation (CI) is a driver of economic growth in response to disruptive technologies and change. Despite the demonstrated ability of family firms to share knowledge with external partners, they are also more reluctant to engage in disruptive change than their non-family counterparts. To reconcile this apparent contradiction, we propose a meta-analysis that synthesizes findings from 59 studies that include data from 99,832 family firms. Our research examines the impact of CI on innovation performance, using subgroup analyses and meta-regressions to investigate how internal and external dimensions of collaboration may influence this relationship. Through our findings, we aim to contribute novel theoretical perspectives to the field of collaborative innovation research in the family business context.
