This work proposes a new explanation of Quevedo’s sonnet «A la ballena y a Jonás, muy mal pintados» from the perspective of satirical-burlesque artistic epigrams: thus, in this paper it is examined as a poem of witty criticism, the reasons for the attack against Cajés and some key terms («vómito», «borrasca») are considered, as well as other issues such as decorum and religious painting in relation to artistic theory.

Abstract
