The sporadic finds from cemeteries are rarely considered in classical archaeology. Those objects are generally interpreted as coming from dismembered graves and consequently excluded from the reconstruction of funerary practices. Through the re-analysis of the evidence from the necropolis of Buffa in Selinus, this paper wants to redress the imbalance and demonstrate the informative potential of the sporadic finds. If properly studied, these represent an important source for the understanding and the reconstruction of the nature of the funerary and post-funeral practices, as well as of the cemeteries landscape.

Abstract

The sporadic finds from cemeteries are rarely considered in classical archaeology. Those objects are generally interpreted as coming from dismembered graves and consequently excluded from the reconstruction of funerary practices. Through the re-analysis of the evidence from the necropolis of Buffa in Selinus, this paper wants to redress the imbalance and demonstrate the informative potential of the sporadic finds. If properly studied, these represent an important source for the understanding and the reconstruction of the nature of the funerary and post-funeral practices, as well as of the cemeteries landscape.
