Abstract

Through time the icon of the monster hides and reveals its combinatorial nature. If, beyond the threshold of the sacred, the monster develops its own nature as an archetype within the symbol (e.g. the Chimera, the Minotaur, the Siren), in modernity the monster becomes planning, artifice and pessimistic ghost of the myth of progress (e.g. Frankenstein). Between attraction and repulsion, artistic and literary testimonies (from Gothic to surrealism, from science fiction to the post-human) will corroborate this reflection on a theme too often taken for granted.
