Abstract · The Amorous Correspondence (‘carteggiamento’) of Maria Savorgnan: Notes on Language and Style · This article offers a profile of Maria Savorgnan as a writer and author through an analysis of her letters to the Venetian humanist Pietro Bembo, her lover in the early years of the sixteenth century. By means of a partial linguistic analysis of this corpus of letters, the essay discusses the main features of Savorgnan’s prose in terms of language and style. Savorgnan’s writing showcases an interdialectal patina, grafted onto lively and traditional Tuscanisms. A comparative examination of her letters with the missives Bembo wrote to her shows the diapha- sic gap between the two writers. The article also examines some stylistic aspects of Savorgnan’s poetic language. In particular, through the case study offered by the word sidio (anagram of the typically Petrarchan disio), it highlights the intriguing coexistence in both Savorgnan’s letters and her lyrical compositions of high literary culture alongside dialectal expressiveness.
