This work is the first case study based on data collected through questionnaires administered to teachers and students of Italian as a foreign language at the Department of Italian Studies at the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) in the months of May-June 2022. The aim of the research was to analyze the perceptions of all those involved in online teaching. The contribution reports the literature on the subject of distance teaching / learning of foreign languages during the pandemic, with reference to Italy and the People's Republic of China; it then continues with a description of the context where the case study was carried out. Subsequently, the methodology of the research is described, the collected data are reported and analyzed, comparing them with the previously mentioned studies. The conclusions reflect what emerged from the statistical analysis and evaluation of the observational data.
