Abstract

In his art criticism, Baudelaire sometimes used a pictorial characteristic that determines an awkward use of colour by the painter and that the language of art calls papillotage. From 1845 to 1862, the meaning of the term papillotage did not very much, but it is possible, if we consider the objects it defines negatively, to estimate its historical significance, and to understand its links with the notion of illusion.
