Ferguson defines diglossia 'a particular type of standardization where two variants of a language coexist in the same community each playing a defined role'. In Italy, it is not uncommon for a university student to be exposed to the two varieties of the Portuguese language, but when this student thinks European Portuguese as a higher variety and Brazilian Portuguese as the language of orality used in everyday communication, we would be on of a case of diglossia? From this experience, I would like to reflect on the teaching policy of Brazilian Portuguese in Italy in a university context and its contact with European Portuguese in that same space.

Abstract

Ferguson defines diglossia 'a particular type of standardization where two variants of a language coexist in the same community each playing a defined role'. In Italy, it is not uncommon for a university student to be exposed to the two varieties of the Portuguese language, but when this student thinks European Portuguese as a higher variety and Brazilian Portuguese as the language of orality used in everyday communication, we would be on of a case of diglossia? From this experience, I would like to reflect on the teaching policy of Brazilian Portuguese in Italy in a university context and its contact with European Portuguese in that same space.
