A short treatise on Homer by George Gemistus Pletho is here published for the first time: new information is given on the manuscript witnesses (especially the ms. Naples, Girolamini C.F.2.11, partly copied by the learned John Dokeianos, who played a role in the production and preservation of several books of Pletho - the ones now in Venice are examined in some detail) as well as on the content of the text, which deals with Homer's biography, with the allegorical reading of the gods in the Iliad, and with the need to athetise the most dangerous parts of the poem.

Abstract

A short treatise on Homer by George Gemistus Pletho is here published for the first time: new information is given on the manuscript witnesses (especially the ms. Naples, Girolamini C.F.2.11, partly copied by the learned John Dokeianos, who played a role in the production and preservation of several books of Pletho - the ones now in Venice are examined in some detail) as well as on the content of the text, which deals with Homer's biography, with the allegorical reading of the gods in the Iliad, and with the need to athetise the most dangerous parts of the poem.
