In his Preface to the American edition of Dar, Vladimir Nabokov has maintained that the real heroine of his novel is Russian literature. As is well known, the text is fraught with quotations from other literary works. At the same time, poetry plays a crucial role in the text, the protagonist being a young Russian poet. This article analyses how the poems (and their quotations) in the novel have been translated by Nabokov himself in the American edition.

Abstract
