Almudena Vidorreta’s book stands on the threshold of what has been defined by the word dispatrio, the neologism coined by Italian writer and critic Luigi Meneghello. The condition of dispatrio, different from exile or displacement, concerns a change of perspective of the subject who moves to another country and another language, that is, a new pole from which he can get to know himself again. From the oscillating dynamic of dispatrio, the poetic subject investigates memory, identity, the new space where he lives: in Almudena Vidorreta’s book, the city of New York. The search for the subject begins precisely from this new point of view: from the architecture that surrounds it, from its often alienated inhabitants, but also from the contact with the language and culture of the New York pole. It is a liminal perspective, which is in the limes, in an existential frontier, and it moves between a ‘here’ (New York) and a ‘there’ (Spain) participating in the condition (perhaps generational) of dispatrio.
