This paper aims to analyse the use of the Italian term occhio (‘eye’) and the Spanish terms/concepts ojo / vista from a translation perspective in order to determine the extent to which equivalence can be established at the idiomatic and phraseological levels. First, a terminological survey will be carried out by using Spanish-Italian bilingual dictionaries in order to verify the presence of this term and identify its phraseological uses. The contribution of lexicographic repertoires will be investigated by synchronically analysing the bilingual dictionaries. Once the phraseological and idiomatic sintagmatic combinations are identified in an Italian monolingual dictionary, we will find out whether these expressions are included in the bilingual dictionaries and what lexicographical treatment they have undergone during the translation process. The translation procedures adopted in the translation process will be analysed by referring to the taxonomies provided by Lawrence Venuti (1999) and Paula Quiroga Munguía (2006). The results show that, despite the supposed linguistic proximity between Spanish and Italian, in the case of ‘occhio’ and ‘ojo’ equivalence is only partial and sometimes null.
