During the Tokugawa periodJapanese knowledge in the field of natural sciences developed thanks to some European naturalists, experts in medicine, surgery botany and pharmacology, who stimulated the growth of modem botanical science in Japan. Transmission of European botanical knowledge was due panicularly to some phisicians in the service of the Dutch East India Company who lived in Deshima from the mid lTth century and afterwards to agents of the Netherlands govemment. This paper deds particularly with the contribution to the development of botanical studies inJapan by Kaempfer, Thunberg and von Siebold.
