The paper focuses on new data on local production of fine ware at Pompeii between the late IV and the mid- III century AD. Data are the results of an integrated approach to archaeological ceramics retrieved by 1980-1981 excavations at the Forum of Pompeii. Ceramological and archaeometric analyses combined outline a complex picture of local production of black gloss, “Gnathia (style) ware”, “Gnathia (style) ware” with reserved or band-decorated external surfaces, red figured ware and Hellenistic band-decorated ware. The ceramics not only illustrate the productivity capacity of Pompeii in its early stages of development but also prove to be a valuable tool in order to explore issues on cultural interaction and transfer of technological knowledge among communities living in the Vesuvian region, in ancient Campania and nearby regions.

Abstract
The paper focuses on new data on local production of fine ware at Pompeii between the late IV and the mid- III century AD. Data are the results of an integrated approach to archaeological ceramics retrieved by 1980-1981 excavations at the Forum of Pompeii. Ceramological and archaeometric analyses combined outline a complex picture of local production of black gloss, “Gnathia (style) ware”, “Gnathia (style) ware” with reserved or band-decorated external surfaces, red figured ware and Hellenistic band-decorated ware. The ceramics not only illustrate the productivity capacity of Pompeii in its early stages of development but also prove to be a valuable tool in order to explore issues on cultural interaction and transfer of technological knowledge among communities living in the Vesuvian region, in ancient Campania and nearby regions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
