This article reconstructs a remarkable case of antiquarian research that developed within Gian Vincenzo Pinelli’s epistolary network between 1599 and 1601, focusing on the interpretation of a Neronian coin depicting Mount Argaeus. Through the study of previously unpublished letters, the essay traces a complex scholarly exchange involving some of the leading European intellectuals of the period, including Lorenzo Pignoria, Marcus Welser, Adolph Occo, Fulvio Orsini, Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, and Lelio Pasqualini. The investigation demonstrates how Renaissance antiquarian scholarship combined material and literary evidence through comparative and analogical methods. The study highlights the importance of epistolary networks as instruments for collaborative knowledge production and for the transnational circulation of antiquarian learning in early modern Europe.
