The paper aims at analysing the presence of Italians, in particular businessmen, in the territories historically subject to the Hungarian crown before the defeat of Mohács (1526). Beginning with a historiographical overview designed to illustrate the ways in which research over the last twenty years has redefined the centrality of Central and Eastern Europe in history from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, the essay examines the dominant historiographical narratives regarding the mobility of businessmen in this macro-region. The analysis is structured around two closely interconnected strands: the resilience of families and that of merchant companies in the territories of the crown. Within this framework, the essay investigates the involvement of private actors, such as merchants and investors, across various domains, ranging from crown financing to military engagement. The case study specifically examines the continuity and resilience of the commercial firms and the lineage of the Bardi of Florence and its branches in Hungary between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The essay concludes by proposing new research perspectives and new historiographical narratives for future insights.
