L’immagine dei Visigoti nella Cronaca di Idazio

The aim of this research is to analyse the unflattering image Hydatius gives us of the Visigoths, focusing on two passages from the Chronicle that describe the abuses committed by Theodoric II’s troops during the Spanish campaign of 456-457 (Hyd., 174 and 186). By comparing these episodes with similar ones within the Chronicle and by drawing a parallel with Hydatius’ treatment of the Sueves, this investigation seeks to demonstrate how the bishop deliberately emphasised certain aspects of the Visigoths’ behaviour, particularly towards the churches and the Catholic clergy, in order to justify his wholly negative judgement of them. The study will finally attempt to understand the political, religious and personal reasons that prompted him to construct such a narrative, which is absent in the other sources describing the same events (Jordanes and Isidore).

L’obiettivo di questa ricerca è quello di analizzare l’immagine poco lusinghiera che Idazio ci ha lasciato dei Visigoti, a partire da due passi della Cronaca che descrivono le violenze commesse dalle truppe di Teodorico II durante la campagna spagnola del 456-457 (Hyd., 174 e 186). Confrontando questi episodi con altri simili all’interno dell’opera e facendo un parallelo col trattamento che Idazio riserva agli Suevi, si intende dimostrare come il vescovo abbia volutamente accentuato alcuni aspetti del comportamento dei Visigoti, in particolare nei confronti delle chiese e del clero cattolico, per giustificare il giudizio integralmente negativo che ci dà di loro. Si cercherà quindi di capire le ragioni politiche, religiose e personali che l’hanno spinto a costruire una narrazione simile, che è invece assente nelle altre fonti che descrivono gli stessi fatti (Giordane e Isidoro).
