Objects of Thought: Clemens Timpler and the Emergence of the “Object Problem” in Early Modern Philosophy

Clemens Timpler plays a pivotal role in the early development of the object problem, offering a significant precursor to Alexius Meinong’s Gegenstandstheorie. Timpler’s redefinition of metaphysics as an ars contemplativa centered on the intelligible diverged from Aristotelian traditions by extending the scope of inquiry to include not only beings (ens) but also non-beings (nihil).
