This article offers a journey through the extraordinary cosmology and eschatology of a small yet paradigmatic community in the eastern Himalayas: the Apatani of Arunachal Pradesh, India. As the result of extensive ethnographic work, local principles and notions of the cosmos and the territory, visions of life and death, as well as unique aspects of indigenous shamanism, will be analyzed here. Social changes due to modernity and the general debate on religion will be addressed as interpretative keys to understanding salient themes of the material and immaterial culture of this Himalayan community.
