After the important studies of Susanne Bobzien (Determinism and Freedom in Stoic Philosophy, Oxford 1998), Michael Frede (The Original Notion of Cause, in J. Barnes – M. Burnyeat – M. Schofijield, Doubt and Dogmatism, Oxford 1980), J. Vuillemin, Nécessité ou contingence, Paris 1984, and after the numerous contributions of J. Brunschwig, J.-B. Gourinat, T. Bénatouïl, A.M. Ioppolo, A.A. Long, R. Salles, this important work by O. D’Jeranian (hereinafter OD’J) constitutes an exemplary refinement of the status quaestionis relating to the deterministic-fatalistic conception of the Stoa. At its core is the theoretical paradox that sees a deterministic vision of reality grafted onto a conception of action governed by a form of anti-deterministic voluntarism.
