This review examines Jay L. Garfield’s Engaging Buddhism: Why It Matters to Philosophy, focusing on its project of bringing Buddhist philosophical traditions into substantive dialogue with contemporary Western philosophy. It discusses Garfield’s treatment of Buddhist metaphysics, theories of the self and consciousness, phenomenology, epistemology, logic and philosophy of language, and ethics. Particular attention is given to interdependence, emptiness, the two truths, self-knowledge, Buddhist accounts of subjectivity, and the relation between epistemological and ethical transformation. The review highlights the book’s contribution to a genuinely cross-cultural philosophical inquiry in which Buddhist thought is approached as an active interlocutor rather than merely as an object of historical study.
