The main ethical and aesthetic models of the Miscelánea Austral by Diego Dávalos y Figueroa derive from Italian tradition. The text is replete with translations and rewritings. In the last coloquio, Dávalos presents his translation of fourteen sonnets from Vittoria Colonna's Rime. On this occasion, I will study these translations, in which the work of the translator combines with that of the poet and generates a dynamic of emulation in line with the admiration that Dávalos openly shows for Colonna, both as a writer and as an ideal feminine lover.

Abstract

The main ethical and aesthetic models of the Miscelánea Austral by Diego Dávalos y Figueroa derive from Italian tradition. The text is replete with translations and rewritings. In the last coloquio, Dávalos presents his translation of fourteen sonnets from Vittoria Colonna's Rime. On this occasion, I will study these translations, in which the work of the translator combines with that of the poet and generates a dynamic of emulation in line with the admiration that Dávalos openly shows for Colonna, both as a writer and as an ideal feminine lover.
