This article analyses migration policies under the Meloni government, highlighting the centrality of a security-driven approach that increasingly conflates asylum seekers with irregular migrants within a broader EU containment framework. It reviews key measures on border control, detention, asylum, return procedures, and labour migration, stressing persistent tensions between legal safeguards, deterrence strategies, and administrative capacity. The paper identifies a mismatch between political rhetoric and migration pressures, alongside structural weaknesses in Italy’s asylum and reception system and limited effectiveness in the implementation of labour migration policies.
