The Transitional Latin Case System of the 8th Century in Tuscany and Alemannia

This study examines the regional characteristics of the decline of the Latin case system in Tuscany (formerly the province of Etruria) and Alemannia (essentially the former Germania Superior and Raetia) based on the 8th century documents of the Chartae Latinae Antiquiores (ChLA). The results of this study confirm that the Gallo-Romance type two-case system still clearly existed in 8th-century Alemannia, while in Tuscany, it seems that a virtually case-less system had been established by the 8th century, i.e., the case system had been largely disintegrated.
