The study examines the environment of bilingual children and is contextualised within current knowledge of the types, phases, and variability of bilingualism. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the parallel use of two different languages by bilingual children in specific language situations. Even within a single sentence, these children consciously alternate between lexical and syntactic structures, creating a “mixed language” perceived by other participants as logical and comprehensible. The examples provided offer an interesting insight into conscious code-switching between the two languages (Czech and Italian, i.e. a Slavic and a Romance language), which occurs even within a single discourse. The article also outlines the reasons why and the situations in which children tend to prefer one language over the other.

Abstract
The study examines the environment of bilingual children and is contextualised within current knowledge of the types, phases, and variability of bilingualism. The aim of the study is to demonstrate the parallel use of two different languages by bilingual children in specific language situations. Even within a single sentence, these children consciously alternate between lexical and syntactic structures, creating a “mixed language” perceived by other participants as logical and comprehensible. The examples provided offer an interesting insight into conscious code-switching between the two languages (Czech and Italian, i.e. a Slavic and a Romance language), which occurs even within a single discourse. The article also outlines the reasons why and the situations in which children tend to prefer one language over the other.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
