This study examines various Hebrew accounts of travels to the Land of Israel (for religious, commercial, and permanent immigration purposes) from the Middle Ages and early Renaissance (Sefer Eldad ha-Dani, Binyamin of Tudela, Petaḥyah of Regensburg, Mešullam of Volterra, ‘Ovadyah of Bertinoro, Mošeh Basola) and follows the gradual emergence of an intellectually detached, quasi-skeptical attitude towards the midrashic and folkloric tradition and the use of indirect sources. This attitude culminated in a classic of Renaissance Jewish historiography such as ‘Azaryah de’ Rossi’s "The Light of the Eyes".
