As part of the Age-It project, a multidisciplinary group promoting policies for healthy and active ageing worked to scientifically address the need for policies to counteract the effects of the ageing Italian population. The work began with a mapping of recommendations from international agencies of European interest (over the last 15 years) to address ageing and its effects. These were compared with national and regional regulations (using a sample of four regions) in order to identify areas where action could still be taken. From this comparison, possible actions were developed, taking into account the principles of mainstreaming ageing, evidence-based policy making, life course and lifelong learning, reduction of social and economic inequalities, and vertical coordination of policies.
