This chapter considers the increasingly important role of exhumations from mass graves in contemporary global history, particularly since the 1980s. Its main aim is to provide readers with an insight into exhumations from mass graves in Eastern Europe from a comparative perspective. To this end, the analysis reconstructs the historical development of the phenomenon from the 20th century to the present day. The text provides a critical overview, drawing on existing case studies to reconstruct the main features of the phenomenon's development over time and space.
