Due to its unifying function, the landscaped painted by Tintoretto in the Saint George and the Dragon conserved in London remains unique in his works and in the series of previous paintings of the same subject. The fragmented organization of the composition, where the episode of the duel takes a secondary position compared to the figure of the fleeing princess, shifts the emphasis of the narrative from the clash to the salvation. This, in turn, produces a second shift, namely from the Eastern setting of the conflict to an evocation of a conflict that is at once local and universal. This landscape thus encourages an analysis of the Venetian notion of territoriality.
