A Fragment of an Attic Sarcophagus in Pentelic Marble from Dogaletto di Mira (ve) · Discovered within one of the perimeter walls of a church, currently dated to the tenth cen- tury ce and originally part of a monastic complex at Dogaletto di Mira, south-west of Ve- nice, the fragment discussed here represents a finding of particularly challenging interpre- tation. In this regard, archaeometric analysis has played a crucial role, identifying its constituent material as Pentelic marble. The use of such a high-quality material points to- wards the Aegen and appears consistent with the class of Attic sarcophagi, to which the frag- ment – dated back to the third century ce – appears to belong to. Both the subject depicted and the processes of reworking and reuse, however, call for further investigation and will be the focus of future research.
