This article analyses the narrative strategies that Antonio Piazza employed in the novel "Il merlotto spennacchiato" (1767). It examines the satirical characterization of the protagonist, the peculiar Venetian spirit with which many episodes of this narration are imbued, the employment of the patterns of the Boccaccian practical joke, and the centrality of female figures. Thus, it shows that this novel is based on a calculated novelistic formula aimed to indulge the contemporary readers’ tastes.
