The article examines the reception in Italy of Guimerà’s drama Mar i cel. It is not possible to speak with certainty of the work’s circulation in Italy, owing to the lack of precise documentary evidence. The article outlines the Catalan tours of Ermete Novelli, who performed on several occasions in the theatres of Barcelona, during which Guimerà’s drama was staged in Italian. It also explores in depth the figure of the work’s translator, Luigi Suñer, and his theatrical activity in Florence in the second half of the nineteenth century.
