The aim of this paper is to examine the consequences of the contact between Spanish and Portuguese in the correspondence of non-native merchants, through the analysis of a corpus of 17 letters written in Spanish between 1581 and 1592 by Portuguese businessmen settled in Venice. After a brief introduction on the historical and linguistic background of 16th century Europe and Portugal, there will be a description of the corpus and an analysis of the main phenomena of interference occurring in the scribes' speech. The results underline the importance of such documents to investigate multilingualism in the world of European commerce in the 16th century and show its effects on the (inter)language of the scribes.
