Most of the red-figure vases produced were conceived as part of grave goods made for both Greeks and indigenous people of the areas next to the Hellenic centres. This is a fact that must always be considered when studying such production. The practical and symbolic role, therefore, that certainly had to be attributed to a specific shape at the time of its creation is central to the conception of the morphological forms of each vase. Abstract

Furthermore, the lack of knowledge on the production activity of the artisan workshops does not allow us to fully understand the degree of decision-making autonomy of the ceramographers in the modelling of the vessel around it and in its subsequent decoration. This paper aims to follow the transformation of one particular shape, the lebes gamikos, from the Attic production to the Apulian one.
