This study comparatively analyzes the “blue” series of color terms in Korean and Italian with the aim of improving understanding and the appropriate use of the semantic categories and usage patterns of Korean “blue” color terms among Italian learners of Korean. Korean has a highly developed system of color terms. Prefixes and suffixes, compounding, and consonant and vowel alternations are used to express not only subtle differences in shades of color but also nuanced distinctions in positive or negative perceptions of color. Italian possesses a similarly sophisticated system of color terms. Additionally, because the Italian cultural background emphasizes the value of aesthetic sensibility, native speakers tend to distinguish and describe colors with great clarity and precision. However, in the context of Korean language education, Italian learners often experience confusion, particularly regarding the use of the “blue” series of color terms. Accordingly, this study examines the “blue” series in both languages and analyzes the factors that tend to confuse Italian learners. The findings reveal differences between the two languages regarding the basic color terms of the “blue” series and regarding the developmental order of those basic terms and their usage patterns.(Ca’foscari University of Venice)
