Despite his prominence as an intellectual in early 16th-century Venice, Giovanni Zamberti remains a somewhat elusive figure. The dedicatee of the first Latin translation of Euclid’s Optics, closely connected to Vit- tore Carpaccio and the court of the Marquises of Man- tua, and instructor in perspective to Daniele Barbaro, he has so far attracted only cursory scholarly attention. A range of previously unpublished archival sources now make it possible to define Zamberti’s biography and network of contacts with greater precision. This article seeks to reconstruct his profile through an analysis of his own testament and those of his relatives, as well as doc- uments attesting to the posts he held in the chancery, his affiliation with the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, and his links to the Gonzaga.
