In this paper, I focus on the concept of human nature as a category essential to both our individual and social lives, yet intrinsically problematic due to its generalizing and oppressive outcomes. I will argue that the traditional issues surrounding the concept of human nature stem mainly from the persistent remnants of essentialism, which attempts to define the general traits of humanity but inevitably fails in light of the principles of organic life revealed by evolutionary theory. Therefore, I will present how a pragmatist approach to human nature, which seeks to capture the relationship lying under human beings’ constitution and development, offers a concept of human nature with critical and emancipatory potential.
