This review examines the new French edition of Valerius of Bierzo’s autobiographical writings and visions of the afterlife, edited by Patrick Henriet and collaborators. The volume offers a meticulously annotated edition and translation of Valerius’ texts alongside seven scholarly studies contextualizing his life, language, manuscript tradition, and theological significance. Highlighting Valerius’ unique contribution to early medieval self-writing, the edition sheds light on his ascetic ideals, monastic critiques, and visionary spirituality, positioning him as a key figure in the cultural and religious landscape of Visigothic Iberia.
