The existing literature on the history of Portuguese emigration unveils the large scale of the phenomenon as well as its diverse trajectories. To understand the drivers behind past migration waves, the article draws on the secondary literature pertaining to the history of Portuguese emigration. Moreover, to grasp the logic of the evident change from transatlantic to European labour flows from Portugal, Immanuel Wallerstein’s World-Systems Analysis is applied to unpack the phenomenon of the historically dual position of Portugal within the world-system. Following an overview of recent emigration trends, the article concludes by highlighting the changing position of Portugal as a country of immigration.
