Based on public and declassified US government records, this essay discusses the attitude of the US Nixon administration (1969-74) toward transnational capital mobility. Its conclusions largely support the view that the administration actively and deliberately contributed to the globalization of finance, cautiously but consciously undermining the Bretton Woods system in the process.
