This study explores how 59 Korean learners of Vietnamese acquire directional elements in motion constructions with the verb đi “go.” Our preliminary findings indicate that: (i) constructions with an overt directional element show higher error rates than non-directional ones; (ii) among directional constructions, some path types appear more challenging than others, with a tentative difficulty ranking of SOURCE > PATH > GOAL; and (iii) the typological mismatch between learners’ L1 (verb-framed Korean) and the target language (satellite-framed Vietnamese) may contribute to these acquisition challenges.

Abstract

This study explores how 59 Korean learners of Vietnamese acquire directional elements in motion constructions with the verb đi “go.” Our preliminary findings indicate that: (i) constructions with an overt directional element show higher error rates than non-directional ones; (ii) among directional constructions, some path types appear more challenging than others, with a tentative difficulty ranking of SOURCE > PATH > GOAL; and (iii) the typological mismatch between learners’ L1 (verb-framed Korean) and the target language (satellite-framed Vietnamese) may contribute to these acquisition challenges.
