In this essay I reconstruct the interpretation of Fanon’s works made by some Italian writers belonging to the New Left movements in the early Sixties, particularly that given by Giovanni Giudici and later and after him by Franco Fortini. Main objects of my analysis are Giudici’s essay Frantz Fanon: L’uomo dalla roncola, which appeared on the review «Quaderni Piacentini» in 1963, and the notes that Giudici took on his own copy of The Wretched of the hearth (first Italian edition as I dannati della terra, published by Einaudi in 1962), which I consulted at Sarzana public library “Corrado Martinetti”. It emerges the picture of Fanon interpreted as a dialectic thinker, a humanist and a theorist of the struggle against alienation, which is indeed quite distant from the Third Worldism as an exaltation of the violent fight between colonized and colonizers.
