This article focuses on the main features of Tirant lo Blanc, comparing them with two dramatisations of the second half of the 20th c. This allows us to identify how the specificities of this materpiece have been rewritten by contemporary playwrights. Titant became soon a classic and inspired other authors, influenced by its aesthetics, narrative pattern and timeless message. Some 20th c. dramatisations show a special capacity of connote the elements borrowed from the source, according to the personal aesthetics and aims of every playwhright who inspired himself in this classic of the universal literature. Joan Sales’s En Tirant lo Blanc a Grècia. Òpera bufa (1958) and Josep Maria Benet i Jornet’s Història del virtuós cavaller Tirant lo Blanc (1988) reveal innovative patterns, original techniques of adaptation and stand out for their results. The article analyses the peculiar strategies in the rewriting of the source, the innovative reacreation of its main features and the specific purpose of each playwright who used it to produce a dramatic reinterpretation of its most relevant characteristics.
