This paper addresses two essential aspects regarding the life of the Novo-Hispanic theatre director (autor de comedias) Gonzalo de Riancho. On the one hand, his relationship with the Mexico City Council in 1595, when he signed an exclusivity contract, which included an annual salary, with this institution. On the other hand, his involvement in the establishment of the city’s first performance spaces. The career of this comedian will be observed from a global perspective, that is, trying to understand how his work is inserted in the set of experiments, achievements, and failures, which led, at different times and in various contexts, to the professionalization of theatre in the territories of imperial Spain.

Abstract
This paper addresses two essential aspects regarding the life of the Novo-Hispanic theatre director (autor de comedias) Gonzalo de Riancho. On the one hand, his relationship with the Mexico City Council in 1595, when he signed an exclusivity contract, which included an annual salary, with this institution. On the other hand, his involvement in the establishment of the city’s first performance spaces. The career of this comedian will be observed from a global perspective, that is, trying to understand how his work is inserted in the set of experiments, achievements, and failures, which led, at different times and in various contexts, to the professionalization of theatre in the territories of imperial Spain.I documenti in ARCA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
